Dahlias where named after Anders Dahl, a Swedish botanist. The Dahlia grows wild in Central America and Mexico. The Aztecs cultivated it and Spanish explorers brought the flower to Europe.
The colour of Dahlias can be yellow, orange, red, white or purple. They flower in late summer or autumn.
Thousands of varieties of dahlias have been developed from hybrids of Dahlia pinnata and D. coccinea.
